Biaggini en el seu llibre, tot explicant la noció de raó en Hume, dóna indicacions molt precises per entendre perquè la lògica ha esdevingut la retòrica del nostre temps:
Take it as a Humean maxim that "rational" is not the same as "logical" ..Although logic is algorithmic, meaning that it follows stric rules, reasoning in general is not ... In other words, there are no moral algorythms we can use to help us decide when the general principles should be applied and when it should not. We are left relying only on our judgement....Similarly, we know the most typlical features of good arguments, but there is no complete set of rules that determine which work and which don't.... La conclussió de Hume segons Biaggini és que la raó individual és molt limitada i ineficient i només té sentit com a raó dialògica. Hume aquí es mostraria doncs com un filòsof platònic, no només per la revindicació del diàleg sinó per la seva consciència de la impossibilitat de justificar lògicament la distinció entre allò noble i allò baix.
