The modern insistence (not uniform, of course) upon replacing rhetoric by logic has resulted in a two-fold defect. We no longer understand the rhetoric of the past, and we do not understand that logic has itself become the rhetoric of the present. I mean by this last remark that we no longer understand the extra logical assumptions and consequences , for ourselves as well as our subject matter, of the substitution of logic and rhetoric
