La lectura que fa Rosen d'Agató al Convit presenta una figura terriblement actual. És a la vegada dur, perquè intel·lectualment depèn de Gòrgies això és de la idea que el poder crea la justícia, i tou, perquè la seva vocació d'esteta el fa apolític. Aquesta combinació és la que trobem a nocions tan malauradament presents al nostre temps com la noció d'educació emocional, darrera la qual hi ha un poc dissimulat propòsit de control del psiquisme humà i d'uniformització de la humanitat. Crec que la pena retenir la consideració final de Rosen sobre aquesta figura:
Today we would no doubt refer Agathon as a aesthete, a term that is normally associated with repugnance toward technology and a disinterest in politics. This is however, a misunderstanding: the aesthete is both a consequence and a catalyst of political, that is, psychic, decay. In the late twentieth century, with our linguistically views, world views, and hermeneutical relativity, we are all aesthetes, that is, spontaneous makers of private worlds; to borrow a metaphor from Proust, the public word is the continuously changing waste product of our private productions. The waters of poetry have mingled with the current of history to furnish us with the fountain of youth
